Discovery Ranch South is an experiential and relationship-based Residential Treatment Center (RTC).
The teens who come to our school want genuine relationships with other people. However, often they struggle in navigating relationships. Many of the troubled teens who come to Discovery Ranch South have a hard time feeling worthy of close, healthy relationships.
Residential Treatment Center for Teens
There are many different reasons that these young people are struggling. Some teens may experience anxiety or depression. Others have histories of trauma or other mental health issues. Every teen is different, they are all talented and capable. Regardless of background or ability, we believe that each and every student has a bright future ahead of them.
By developing nurturing relationships with your teen, and challenging them to new experiences, we will help them find a new, healthier future. One of the issues facing families who attempt to treat troubled teens in their home environment is that the home environment has triggers that reinforce negative behavioral patterns.
When your child finds herself in an entirely new environment on our big, open campus, she will have the opportunity to develop new, healthier patterns. Your child will develop nurturing relationships with clinicians, staff members, and other students.
In the safe context of experiential therapy, she will also face challenges. She will learn skills that will better allow her to cope with challenges in healthy ways. These skills will stay with her long after she returns home.

Discovery Ranch South offers the perfect healing environment for troubled teens with mental health or behavioral issues. The Residential Treatment Program is located on a beautiful 60-acre ranch. However, it is also only 10 minutes from the urban hub of Cedar City, Utah.

Family involvement is one of the most important aspects of helping your child to recover. You will be kept up-to-date on your child's progress through the Parent Portal. Creating Strong Relationships Creates Strong Families
There is no residential treatment center that can fix your family's problems. That is not what we are offering at Discovery Ranch South.
At Discovery Ranch South, you and your family will learn the skills and tools you need to be able to problem-solve and overcome challenges on your own. The ranch provides a safe space for your family to do deep emotional work.
Here at the ranch, troubled teens develop their identities and explore new ways to overcome their challenges. At the same time, we provide parents with the tools and resources they need to create a great home environment.
Your child may take part in six core therapy groups throughout the week. She may also be in up to two specialty groups. She will have two individual therapy sessions each week.
You will be involved in one family therapy session each week. These family therapy sessions typically take place via video conferencing.
Your child will be in equine therapy throughout her entire stay. Because horses are emotionally intelligent animals, during equine therapy your child will see her own emotions reflected here in an honest, unbiased manner. Horses respond to people in the same manner that people respond to them.

At Discovery Ranch South, Your Child Will Have The Opportunity To Experience Life-changing Events
There are many different therapeutic schools. Discovery Ranch South is the right fit for your child because memorable life-altering experiences and building strong relationships are built into the core of our program.
The ranch offers two unique, once-in-lifetime opportunities for students who earn the privilege of participating.
Also, every student takes part in our Calf Program. This program teaches adolescents how to adapt to changing relationships.
In addition, every student takes part in Outdoor Recreation and Performing Arts programs. These programs allow teens the chance to discover new hobbies and skills. Finding healthy outlets can change troubled youth into thriving young youth.
Art-based Exploration
In the spring, students can take part in an arts-based trip to New York. During this educational tour, students visit Ellis Island and the 911 Museum. The experience of visiting these historic locations gives the teens a chance to personally appreciate their impact.
The students also see Broadway plays and take part in acting workshops. The purpose of the trip is to help the students out of their comfort zone and connect to history and the arts in deeply meaningful ways.
Service-based Learning
In the fall, the students may earn the privilege of taking part in a service-based trip to Costa Rica. The students volunteer at either an orphanage or a school in Costa Rica.
Service projects may include helping to teach English or taking part in repair work at the facility. Most importantly, our students interact and play with the Costa Rican children.
While visiting this beautiful country, our students can experience a new culture. They will go to markets, ruins, and farms. By learning about a different culture, the students will develop a new appreciation for the world around them.
The Calf Program
Many troubled teens struggle to navigate, maintain, or accept healthy relationships. The Calf Program helps the students to better understand the changes in relationships through the relationship they have with their calf.
The Calf Program is strategically created to help your child develop their emotional health. The ranch uses calves specifically because they are not bred to be companion animals.
As the calf gets older and more independent, the relationship between your child and the calf will change. Those changes help provide a framework for your child to adapt to the inevitable changes in human relationships.
When the calf is newborn, they are affectionate, and loving. The calf will want to be nurtured. Your child may form a strong bond with their calf as she bottle feeds the calf and cares for him.
As the calf gets older, the relationship between your child and the calf will change. He will no longer be completely dependent on your child.
Your child will learn to adapt to that change. She will become better able to accept changing relationships. Family therapy and as well as individual therapy sessions will reinforce these ideas.
Approximately halfway through their stay, your child will have the responsibility of caring for a second calf. She can apply the skills she learned from the first calf and put them into practice with her second calf.
For many young youths, the Calf Program also helps them to develop a more positive mindset. By focusing on their calves and their needs, they appreciate the importance of caring for others and putting others' needs before their own.
Outdoor Recreation and Performing Arts Programs
Both the Outdoor Recreation Program and the Performing Arts Program serve specific purposes. For struggling teens to find success, they need to learn how to replace unhealthy behaviors with healthy behaviors.
However, the same program will not be the right fit for each student. At Discovery Ranch South, we challenge students in healthy, appropriate ways.
While at the ranch, your child will discover new interests and new strengths. She can continue to develop and build upon these talents long after she has returned home.
That is why, approximately halfway through their stay, your child will be able to choose to focus on one of two different tracks: Advanced Outdoor Recreation or Advanced Performing Arts. Your child will focus on building mastery in their chosen field.
For example, during the winter, Advanced Outdoor Recreation students can go skiing or snowboarding. During the summer, they may take part in climbing, bouldering, and hiking.
Performing Arts students attend Cedar City's famous Shakespeare Festival. They may also participate in the National Shakespeare Competition.
Regardless of which track your child chooses, as she builds mastery, she will go back home with a new world open.

Discovery Ranch South offers a patented, peer-reviewed assessment that will take the guesswork out of finding what is right for your family.
The Youth Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ) will help you understand your family's needs. Completing the assessment does not represent any obligation. Also, we will not share your contact information with any third party.
You will also receive the results of the Y-OQ assessment in an email. The results of the assessment will show how your teen compares to other young adults. You will get a better sense of your teen's situation.
